The demand for personal trainers and other fitness professions has been on the increase for years.

So, why are people still looking for personal trainers?

For many individuals, who are not in the fitness industry, it's not always obvious what it is they need to do.

We feel there are many reasons why members work with personal trainers from individualised programs, support with goals, accountability or for some professional advice.

Here are 7 reasons why members want to hire a personal trainer.

1. They are not seeing results

Many members consistently come to the gym for weeks, months, even years and still don't reach their goals. Hiring a trainer, they can see their situation more clearly from the outside, you can offer a new perspective and give them professional advice so they can see the results.

2. They don't know where to start

People are not born knowing how to exercise correctly, or write programs which specify exercises to do, or how to fit it into their lifestyle. Even though there is a lot of information out there, completing the task can feel so overwhelming.

A trainer can help support the process, by suggesting activities that work for them, their schedule, monitor exercise intensity, show exercises through a progressive method, track progress and teach each exercise effectively.

3. They need a challenge

Like we mentioned before, many members do come in on a regular basis, but repeatedly doing the same thing over and over again. As a trainer, you can teach members how to get the most out of exercises, while also making sure they don't overdo it or ensure they're ready to take their training to the next level. People find it hard to slack off when someone is standing their telling them to do more, pushing them, encouraging and motivating them.

4. They want support during workouts

Many members may follow workouts they have brought online or seen from their favourite influencer on Instagram. Having a personal trainer for sessions offers the benefit of helping them learn form and technique the right way. This is especially important for someone who is new to strength training and may need more practice. As you can give them targeted exercises, demonstrate good form, teach them how to lift weights and incorporate more muscle groups, whilst providing extra support.

5. Give them accountability

Exercising is tough. It’s tiring. As a trainer you not only make sure you set weekly goals, then check in on a regular basis to see how you're doing, but you hold them accountable. No skipped reps or workouts as you will ensure they do the right exercises, even the tough ones, with the right amount of weight to reach your goals.

And if they fall off track, the members have to answer for it. Knowing that they will have to report in can make them less likely to skip workouts.

6. You Have a Specific Illness, Injury, or Condition

Due to the amount of office based jobs or overtime people are performing, many members may have a specific injury or condition, their doctor may want you to exercise but many people don’t know how to work around an injury?

That's where your expertise comes in. Many trainers even have specialties that allow them to work with clients who have special needs (if you are looking to up-skill yourself why not look at our other courses). Here you will be able to help with creating specific programs, increase balance, strength, stability or alleviate some of the pain and discomfort, from specific medical conditions.

7. Training for an event

Many members may decide to take up runs for charities that are close to their heart. Such runs include, tough mudder, couch to 5k and even half marathons. As a trainer you should firstly always be qualified in that specific area and give clients workouts tailored to that specific sport whilst avoiding overdoing it. Provide a schedule to ensure the right amount of recovery time is put in and most importantly avoid any injury. Members often won't know where to start with such a training plan, therefore your expertise and support as a trainer, will be able to guide them from start to finish, safely!
